NEWS FROM THE MOVEMENT
Altamaha Coastkeeper (Georgia, U.S.) applauds the work of Georgia-Alabama Land Trust, The Conservation Fund, and NRCS to protect another 2,335 acres of land on the Altamaha River. This newly protected area contributes to over 180,000 acres of conserved lands in the Altamaha conservation corridor – protecting the Altamaha River from development impacts and keeping the Altamaha wild.
Congrats again to Charles Scribner, Executive Director, Black Warrior Riverkeeper, for his 20 years of protecting the Black Warrior River watershed. This special milestone was recently featured in this article from Bham Now. Since joining as Director of Development in 2005 and stepping into the Executive Director role in 2010, Charles has been a steady force for clean water and conservation across the region, helping shape local environmental efforts, from river cleanups to community advocacy.
Gunpowder Riverkeeper (Maryland, U.S.) revealed alarming results from their testing of the Gunpowder River. Samples collected within 48 hours of heavy rain showed E. coli levels that were ten times higher than the U.S. EPA’s acceptable threshold for swimming. The Gunpowder River supplies drinking water to 1.8 million people in the Baltimore region and provides valuable habitats as well as spaces for activities like boating, fishing, and swimming. However, this river faces numerous risks, including sediment from development, pesticides, tire dust, warming temperatures, E. coli, and more. Gunpowder Riverkeeper has successfully shut down a coal plant located on the banks of the lower tidal river, filed lawsuits against a housing development posing a significant risk to the river, and advocated for stricter stormwater controls with the Maryland Department of the Environment. They post the results of the test samples every Thursday.
Mobile Baykeeper (Alabama, U.S.) received a 30-horsepower tiller outboard and two 150-horsepower outboards from Yamaha Motor Corporation. This donation aims to improve water quality and reduce pollution in Mobile Bay through marine research and habitat restoration. As part of its Yamaha Rightwaters national sustainability program, Yamaha is committed to protecting and restoring the Coastal Alabama Watershed. With the new equipment, Mobile Baykeeper can investigate pollution in narrow waterways, use the vessels for research purposes, transport oysters, conduct restoration work, reach open water outfalls, and take influential leaders on tours.
Suncoast Waterkeeper’s (Florida, U.S.) Mangrove Ranger program recently revealed its findings on canopy loss on World Mangrove Day, July 26. This volunteer program uses drones to map vulnerable mangrove forests in Manatee County, assess their health each year, and advocate for improved protection of these vital coastal resources.
Twin Harbor Waterkeepers (Washington, U.S.) participated in post-Independence Day beach cleanups along the Washington Coast. Approximately 42.5 tons of fireworks debris were collected from Grays Harbor County beaches alone; however, a week later, much of it had remained on the beaches. Fireworks are linked to negative effects on human health and have significant impacts on seabirds and shorebirds. In extreme cases, these impacts can lead to death by starvation, as these birds cannot digest plastic. Even though the beaches may appear clean after the initial cleanups, debris can be washed out to sea, adding to the existing marine debris in the ocean. Fireworks pose numerous hazards, including noise, bright lights, microplastics, and metals.
