A photo of heavyset Texas National Guard soldiers went viral after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth mocked "fat troops" during a Sept 30 speech to top military commanders. The viral photo prompted mockery and an official military response.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said he's tired of seeing "fat" soldiers who give the military a "bad look".
"Frankly, it's tiring to look out at combat formations, or really any formation, and see fat troops. Likewise, it's completely unacceptable to see fat generals and admirals in the halls of the Pentagon and leading commands around the country and the world," Hegseth said in his Quantico speech. "It's a bad look. It is bad, and it's not who we are."
Now, the statement is drawing more attention, after hundreds of Texas National Guard troops landed in Chicago at US President Donald Trump's order in response to protests against the government's immigration policies.
A viral photo, snapped by ABC News, shows several heavyset guardsmen in army fatigues hopping out of a truck with rifles and duffel bags in hand as they prepare to be deployed around the city.
Online, the image blew up. Comment sections flooded with puns and derision ranging from the creative to the cruel. "Pete isn’t going to be happy with this picture at all," one person wrote on Facebook. "Them boys be looking for the nearest Chicago pizza spot," another wrote on Reddit.
In a statement sent to reporters on Thursday, the National Guard said soldiers on the deployment who don't meet "height, weight and physical fitness standards" would be sent home and replaced.
"On the rare occasions when members are found not in compliance, they will not go on mission. They will be returned to their home station, and replacements that do meet standards will take their places," the statement read.
Weight is one of several qualifiers for people looking to join the military. Being overweight is the biggest disqualifier for military service for Americans between the ages of 17 and 24, according to the Associated Press.
