NEWS FROM THE MOVEMENT
Chattahoochee Riverkeeper (Georgia, U.S.) has requested that LaGrange Mayor Arrington and the city council enact a 90-day moratorium on data center development. This pause would allow the city to create an ordinance that will guide future data center developments. CRK signed a letter stating that this request is a reasonable and cautious step that elected officials can take to engage with an active and motivated community. Data centers require more than just typical economic development projects. The Georgia Department of Community Affairs is currently revising the rules governing the Developments of Regional Impact application and review process to address data centers as a distinct type of development.
Congaree Riverkeeper (South Carolina, U.S.) sent notice letters to two major plastic manufacturing companies, informing them of an intend to sue in federal court if they fail to address their ongoing pollution of the Congaree River. The two companies, Alpek Polyester and Eastman Chemical, operate a large industrial plant on the banks of the Congaree River near Congaree National Park. According to the letter, the plant is engaged in multiple forms of illegal pollution: releasing large numbers of plastic pellets—known as "nurdles"—into the Congaree River; discharging the toxic chemical 1,4-dioxane without authorization; and violating pollution limits in its discharge permit designed to protect aquatic life.
Hudson Riverkeeper (New York, U.S.) recently issued a press release highlighting the harmful algal blooms (HABs) moving down the Hudson River. According to the release, this may be the most extensive HAB in the estuary in living memory. HABs can produce toxins that are harmful to the health of both people and animals, prompting warnings against contact with the contaminated water. Hudson Riverkeeper states that the increasing severity of these blooms is due to climate change, creating the optimal conditions for their growth.
Milwaukee Riverkeeper (Wisconsin, U.S.) is suing the City of Racine, alleging that officials have withheld information regarding the projected water usage of a planned Microsoft data center. Over six months ago, the organization submitted an open records request seeking information on the water consumption for the Mount Pleasant facility, but has yet to receive a response. Microsoft plans to transform 1,900 acres of Mount Pleasant farmland into a new AI data center, using freshwater resources from the Great Lakes region to cool its hyperscale data centers. Cheryl Nenn, Milwaukee Riverkeeper, stated in a press release that these data centers will have significant implications for Wisconsin’s environment.
