NEWS FROM THE MOVEMENT
Apalachicola Riverkeeper (Florida, U.S.) celebrated a significant victory when a Tallahassee administrative judge recommended that the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) deny a permit for oil and gas drilling in the Apalachicola River Basin in Northwest Florida. In April 2024, Apalachicola Riverkeeper challenged a proposed permit issued by DEP that would allow Clearwater Land and Minerals LLC to drill a directional exploratory well. If a spill were to occur, it could have catastrophic consequences, especially given the closeness to streams, wetlands, and other bodies of water. Meanwhile, the Florida legislature is advancing a proposal (HB 1143) to ban oil exploration and drilling near the Apalachicola River. This push for the bill is partly motivated by the aftermath of the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill, which resulted in miles of oiled beaches in the Florida Panhandle.
Black Warrior Riverkeeper, Cahaba Riverkeeper, Choctawhatchee Riverkeeper, Coosa Riverkeeper, and Mobile Baykeeper, (Alabama, U.S.) have submitted a petition for rulemaking to Alabama’s Environmental Management Commission. This petition urges the state to update and publish amended toxicity values for twelve priority toxic pollutants. Alabama has not reviewed or adopted revised toxicity values for these pollutants as required by the Clean Water Act, which is essential for protecting the health of water users and fish consumers in the state. The petition for rulemaking is supported by substantial evidence and information advocating for the proposed amendments.
Hudson Riverkeeper (New York, U.S.) secured $235,000 for Groundwork Hudson Valley through their recent successful Clean Water Act lawsuit. The funding will go towards the organization’s "Environmental Benefit Project," which aims to plant nearly 400 trees across 50 different species at local schools. This initiative is designed to capture stormwater runoff, provide cooling benefits, and improve water quality in the region. Additionally, the funds will support Groundwork Hudson Valley's active floodplain restoration sites. The organization will also conduct regular cleanups and develop designs for nature-based projects to enhance local habitats.
London Waterkeeper (United Kingdom) has partnered with Waterscan to enhance its efforts in protecting the city’s rivers. As Waterscan’s Charity of the Year, London Waterkeeper will receive support in developing new tools to streamline data storage and analysis, enabling the organization to gain clearer insights from complex urban water quality data. Additionally, Waterscan will assist with skills-based volunteering, including research into emerging issues such as PFAS.
Upper Missouri Waterkeeper (Montana, U.S.) and the Big Hole River Foundation's petition to address pollution sources in the Big Hole River has been denied by the Montana DEQ. The DEQ claims there are no permitted pollution sources, so an impairment designation is unnecessary. A U.S. EPA spokesperson stated that the current nitrogen and phosphorus standards will remain in effect until revised. In response, Upper Missouri Waterkeeper and the Big Hole Foundation resubmitted additional materials, urging the DEQ to take action and apply the numeric nutrient standards.
Waterkeepers Bangladesh (Bangladesh) recently participated in a discussion in the Philippines to help establish regional hubs for the Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature. These hubs aim to decentralize advocacy for nature's rights, fostering international collaboration and knowledge sharing. Additionally, Waterkeepers Bangladesh attended a policy dialogue on renewable energy for pollution-free cities, highlighting the need for a Renewable Energy Master Plan and investment strategies, discussed by young climate leaders during "Walk for the Earth" on Earth Day.
