NEWS FROM THE MOVEMENT
Congratulations to Joe Cavanaugh for becoming the new Calusa Waterkeeper (Florida, U.S.). With decades of experience in marine science, water quality monitoring, and community engagement, Cavanaugh is eager to bring new energy to safeguarding the Caloosahatchee River and its watershed. He has consistently worked at both local and federal levels to promote clean water policies and protect critical habitats. With a Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, Cavanaugh possesses extensive knowledge of the region’s water challenges. His collaborative spirit and hands-on approach position him well to develop Calusa Waterkeeper’s mission further. Charles Avery, President of the Calusa Waterkeeper board, believes that Cavanaugh’s "experience, knowledge, and passion for Southwest Florida’s waters will be invaluable."
Chris Manganiello, the Water Policy Director for Chattahoochee Riverkeeper (Georgia, U.S.), was recently featured on WABE's latest radio segment focused on water issues. The Douglas County water treatment plant is planning a $390 million upgrade to expand the Dog River Reservoir to meet the needs of a growing population and future drought conditions. However, Manganiello is concerned that the current policy conditions aren't equipped to handle the increasing water demand. Georgia's policies for water conservation and the prioritization of water access during droughts have not adequately considered the impact of data centers, which consume significant amounts of water. For example, a proposed data center, Project Sail in Coweta County, is projected to use up to 9 million gallons of water daily. In response, Chattahoochee Riverkeeper is compiling information on the role of data centers by utilizing Georgia's development of regional impact reports and data from other environmental organizations. Tom Perkins, Vice President of 365 Data Centers, is committed to using technology to promote sustainability and address water usage challenges. Data centers typically rely on two primary cooling methods: evaporative cooling, which loses a significant amount of water, and closed-loop cooling, which consumes much more electricity.
Coosa Riverkeeper (Alabama, U.S.) plans to sue Alabama Power Company for its ongoing groundwater pollution from the former Gadsden Steam Plant. Alabama Power stored nearly 1.5 million tons of toxic coal ash at Plant Gadsden, where they capped a nearby pond in an unlined, leaking pit. Currently, 40% of the ash remains in contact with groundwater. The company relies on a faulty groundwater monitoring system that inadequately measures how the coal ash contaminates the groundwater, violating national coal ash disposal standards. Alabama Power has 60 days to address these violations; otherwise, the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) will file a lawsuit on behalf of Coosa Riverkeeper. Coal ash contains dangerous heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic, posing a serious public health risk to nearby drinking water sources. As other utilities in the area have excavated or removed unlined ponds, Alabama Power is expected to follow suit.
Rachel Silverstein, the CEO of Miami Waterkeeper (Florida, U.S.), expresses her concern about the safety of the Turkey Point nuclear power plant, especially when climate change is accelerating the rise of sea levels and fueling more powerful hurricanes. Florida Power & Light's (FPL) Turkey Point nuclear plant in South Miami-Dade County has been granted federal approval to operate for the next 27 years. Miami Waterkeeper is leading an effort to appeal Turkey Point's license extension, arguing that FPL has not adequately addressed climate risks, especially since the plant is one of the most climate-vulnerable facilities in the nation. While the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) states that Turkey Point is safe and meets its requirements, Silverstein worries that these standards are insufficient, particularly given that sea levels in South Florida have risen by 6 inches in the last 30 years. Instead of providing reassurance about the plant's safety, FPL released a statement citing a 2013 in-depth study that demonstrated the plant's stability against extreme natural events.
Orange County Coastkeeper (California, U.S.) hosted a large-scale trash and art project at Huntington State Beach for Kids Ocean Day, with over 1,000 students representing 14 elementary schools across Orange County. The students collected 157 pounds of trash and used the bags to create a giant aerial art message in the sand promoting this year’s Kids Ocean Day theme, “Restore Power.” Genesee Ouyand, the education director of Orange County Coastkeeper, emphasized that the main goal of this cleanup was to demonstrate to children that even small actions, like picking up trash as a community, can make a significant difference. Leading up to the event, Coastkeeper educators visited numerous schools, conducting interactive assemblies on ocean pollution, conservation, and the interconnectedness of Southern California’s watersheds. Kids Ocean Day aims to engage students who are especially vulnerable to environmental pollution, providing them with a deeper understanding of their role as environmental stewards and ocean protectors. By using the collected trash as material for their art, the students sent a powerful message urging others to join the fight to protect and preserve our waterways.
