Within this 73-square-meter space lies the daily comforts of a woman living alone, as well as the warm moments she enjoys with her parents and friends. Gabriella Guerreiro of Intu Arquitetura avoided disrupting this balance with overly complex design. Instead, she embraced functionality and aesthetics to transform this apartment in S?o Paulo's Pinheiros district, Brazil, into a "living container" that combines practicality and warmth.
Upon opening the door, the first thing you notice is the space's breathability—the Monofloor flooring, like a warm canvas, seamlessly connects the kitchen, living room, and social area. Every step feels fluid and effortless, seamlessly flowing through the seamless flow. This sense of openness isn't accidental; it's the designer's precise solution for expanding a small space: she connected the kitchen with the service area, relocated the laundry room to the terrace, and added a custom countertop next to the stove. In the morning, she cuts fruit and bakes bread here, where sunlight streams in from the terrace. The countertop is wide enough to accommodate a coffee pot and breakfast tray without feeling crowded. In the evening, when preparing dinner for friends, the distinct cutting and cooking areas eliminate the need to fiddle around on a cramped worktop. These optimized functions bring a sense of ease to daily life.
The design's gentleness lies in the details. The custom cabinets by Yama Móveis are the softest accents in the space: their rounded edges offer a neutral, cold edge, while the wood grain exudes a natural warmth. Indirect lighting nestles in the cabinets, providing a gentle, non-glaring glow when you wake up at night, rather like a veil enveloping the space. The living room's Teto Vinílico wood-grain vinyl ceiling is even more captivating. Unlike the monotony of ordinary ceilings, its light wood texture creates a sense of relaxation and closeness to nature as the eye rises. Curling up on the sofa to read, the wood grain above seems to filter out the noise of the outside world, softening even the light.
The bathroom design embodies the wisdom of compromise. The client wanted to save on tile budget and invest it in areas that impact the daily experience. Gabriella retained the developer's original tiles and instead enhanced them with ceramic fixtures and custom woodwork from Ceramica Atlas. The sleek lines of the ceramic storage box by the sink and the wood-colored shelf in front of the mirror echo the overall style of the house. While minimalist, the kitchen's Portobello Gouache finish feels like a minimalist stamp. Its neutral hue doesn't steal the show, yet it firmly anchors the design's timeless feel, ensuring it won't look dated even after years.
The most moving aspects of the design are the unexpected resonances. The Boobam "Mushroom Acoustic Chandelier" above the dining room wasn't a unilateral choice by the designer, but rather a curious coincidence. A few days earlier, the client had seen the design of this lamp at a university lecture. When Gabriella proposed the "Hogar S Pendant," they both laughed, "It turns out we've already had a connection with this lamp." Today, this mushroom-shaped lamp has become a mood-setter in the social area: In the evenings, when chatting with friends around the dining table, its acoustic design dampens ambient noise, allowing laughter and conversation to be heard more clearly. The warm yellow light, filtered through the mushroom-shaped lampshade, falls on the Vmobili dining chairs and Casa Still decorative ornaments, making even the food seem more appetizing. This "unique connection born of coincidence" imbues the space with the client's personal touch, transcending the coldness of a "showroom."
After three months of design and five months of construction, the apartment finally has a "new soul." The client described it as "a dream come true"—during remote oversight, Gabriella accurately understood her needs, incorporating details like "a workspace" and "a comfortable place for her parents" into the design. Now, she can work efficiently at the small desk in the living room, host friends over for weekend dinners, and when her parents visit, the expanded space is spacious and comfortable, without a trace of cramped space.
The Apto 906 renovation was never about design for design's sake. It was more like a "life translation": transforming clients' daily needs and desire for community into touchable countertops, cuddly sofas, and conversation-inducing lighting. Here, every design element serves life, and every inch of space carries emotion—perhaps this is what good design looks like: unassuming yet making life more comfortable and meaningful.
