Opening the door to the Vasilyevsky Island apartment, within a 100-square-meter space, a "creative dialogue tailored for future architects" quietly unfolds. The design, informed by the rationality of Bauhaus and the poetic light and shadow of James Turrell, interweaves minimalist white with the warmth of wood. It accommodates both the lively gatherings of friends and the quiet contemplation of solitude—not just a living space, but an "incubator" for young architecture students.
The design's sense of spatial transparency is the first expression of freedom. Without heavy walls, the entrance flows like water into the elongated living room. The office area is separated by a single glass partition, allowing unimpeded vision to flow through all areas. The afternoon sun filters through the glass, casting subtle shadows on the white walls and floor, giving the 100-square-meter space a visually expansive, breathable feel. This "boundless" concept echoes the architectural student's philosophy: creativity should not be confined, just like light and vision in a space; freedom allows for the growth of new possibilities.
The living room's dining area is the centerpiece of the home. A large, warm wooden table stands quietly in the center, its texture imbued with natural warmth. Here, it can be a dining table for friends to share a meal, a workbench for laying out blueprints and discussing designs, or even a makeshift "audience seat" for a movie. The full-height bookshelves behind the table are already filled with anticipation for the future: once the owner displays architectural catalogs and design manuscripts, they will transform from simple storage shelves into a private "inspiration library," giving the living room an added layer of study and research beyond just socializing.
The kitchen's design embodies a masterful balance between order and beauty. Unlike typical open kitchens, this one uses sliding panels to discreetly conceal the cooking area. When closed, the clutter of kitchenware and traces of cooking fumes instantly disappear, returning the space to a minimalist, uncluttered aesthetic. When it's time to prepare food, the panels slide open, creating a seamless connection with the living room. This ingenious "hidden and revealed" design, like the balance between function and form in architectural design, is both practical and aesthetically pleasing.
Private areas are cozy nooks reserved for introverts. The study, bedroom, and bathroom continue the overall sober palette, yet each space features a comfortable single chair. The study chair, next to a floor lamp, is perfect for late-night architectural readings. The bedroom chair, by the window, allows for morning sun-filled reflections while organizing design ideas. The bathroom, on the other hand, employs the art of light and shadow to its fullest. Within the all-white space, the luminous ceiling resembles a soft cloud, reminiscent of James Turrell's installations where light takes center stage. The interplay of the sound of flowing water and warm light washes away the day's fatigue and fuels inspiration.
Light is the invisible designer throughout the apartment. The light boxes and lighting fixtures in every room are more than just illumination tools: the living room lights can be dimmed to a bright and lively setting for a gathering with friends, creating a lively atmosphere; late at night, when alone, the lights can be dimmed, creating a quiet and gentle space perfect for poring over blueprints or conceptualizing a plan. This magical play of light and shadow, alternating with the scene, imbues the space with emotion: it can be a lively stage for parties, a contemplative corner for solitude, and even a canvas for architectural inspiration.
Standing in this space, one can clearly sense the symbiotic relationship between design and user: Bauhaus furniture cultivates a sense of classic aesthetics, the warmth of wood conveys the warmth of life, and the play of light and shadow inspires design imagination. For this future architecture student, LF20 Apartment is more than just a "home," it is her first classroom for learning about architecture and understanding space. Here, every touch of the wooden tabletop, every observation of the play of light and shadow on the wall, every moment of contemplation in the corner chair, all serve to accumulate authentic experiences of "beauty and life" for her future design career.
This is the charm of LF20 Apartment: with its minimalist form, warm materials and dynamic light and shadow, it has built a home for a young creator and a creative garden where “inspiration never runs dry.”
