Jewelry(jewellery)/jewel
這兩個(gè)詞看起來(lái)沒(méi)有什么區(qū)別，其實(shí)是有的。Jewelry（也可以寫成jewellery），是“珠寶首飾”的總稱，只有單數(shù)，沒(méi)有復(fù)數(shù)，而jewel則是指單個(gè)的“貴重首飾”。
從質(zhì)地和價(jià)值上說(shuō)，jewelry可以是金屬制品、塑料制品或木制品，因此，它們可能貴重，也可能不貴，而jewel則一定是貴重金屬(如金子、鉑金或其混合制品)、寶石(gem, gemstone, precious stone)等，因此，jewel也有“最值錢的東西；難能可貴的人”的含義，如the jewel in the crown
