Through discussion and textual analysis, participants will consider how Zauner and Westover employ strategies such as narrative framing, sensory description, and the interplay between memory and reflection. Attention will be given to the ways in which opening chapters establish voice, thematic concerns, and reader engagement.

Julia Hollingsworth

Julia擁有University of East Anglia（UEA）創(chuàng)意寫作（非虛構(gòu)方向）碩士學(xué)位，以及Abilene Christian University英語文學(xué)學(xué)士學(xué)位。此外，她還在Institute of Ongoing Education at Cambridge University完成了創(chuàng)意寫作證書課程和文憑課程。2019年，她以本科學(xué)術(shù)論文榮獲德克薩斯創(chuàng)意寫作協(xié)會頒發(fā)的“最佳本科論文獎”。

Michelle Zauner’s Crying in H-Mart (2021) is a bestselling memoir that intertwines personal narrative with cultural reflection. Written by the Korean American musician best known as the lead singer of Japanese Breakfast, the book recounts Zauner’s coming-of-age, her complex relationship with her mother, and her experiences of grief after her mother’s death from cancer. Food—particularly Korean cuisine—serves as both motif and metaphor, anchoring memories of family, heritage, and loss.

Tara Westover’s Educated (2018) is a memoir that traces the author’s journey from a survivalist family in rural Idaho to earning a PhD at the University of Cambridge. Raised without formal schooling and isolated from mainstream society, Westover recounts her struggle to reconcile loyalty to her family with her desire for education and autonomy.

The book explores themes of memory, resilience, and the power of learning, while also questioning the boundaries between truth and personal narrative. Acclaimed for its vivid storytelling and nuanced portrayal of family conflict, Educated became an international bestseller and was named one of the New York Times’s Ten Best Books of the Year.
