A scenic area's rule forbidding tourists from picking up fallen maple leaves has recently gone viral on Chinese social media, drawing both criticism and support from netizens.
On Wednesday, a video posted online showed that at Laobiangou Scenic Area in Benxi, Liaoning province, a broadcast reminder could be heard urging visitors not to pick up or hold maple leaves — "not even those picked up from the ground".

While many netizens expressed confusion with the ban extending to collecting fallen leaves, others defended the policy, pointing out that some visitors might pluck leaves and claim they were picked up from the ground.
On Thursday morning, a staff member from the scenic area responded, stating that the rule has long been in place to protect the natural environment.
It was noted that as early as 2024, another video had shown multiple broadcast reminders throughout the area with the message: "Picking, holding, or collecting maple leaves is prohibited. You are more beautiful than the maple leaves — there's no need to take them home. Please protect the environment and travel responsibly."
According to an article by China Science Communication, fallen leaves, twigs, bark, flowers, and grass form a litter layer on the forest floor. Through microbial activity, these materials decompose into humus, enriching the soil with nutrients and helping with moisture retention.
In a previous report by CCTV News, an expert in garden waste management explained that branches and leaves under 5 cm can be crushed and composted to produce organic matter. It's estimated that one ton of leaves can yield 300–400 kg of organic material.
